All year around, the boatmen on the Maroni ride their boats, loaded with freight, on this very challenging river. This arduous and dangerous activity connects the many remote villages (Grand Santi, Papaichton, Maripasoula, Antecum Pata…) to the city of St Laurent du Maroni. During the rainy season, the journey can be as short as only two days. But during the dry season, the same trip can easily last up to one week and needs incredible efforts to unburden the boat of its load, push it on a tiny stream and load it again, and this all day along.
